WHAT’S IN YOUR BAG? A TAIWANESE RECIPE BOOK

The project began with a familiar question I often ask myself in UK supermarkets…

How do you cook the food you miss when the ingredients from home aren’t available in the same way?

Over time, this question shifted from recipes to something more personal — about living between cultures, and learning how to adapt what you carry with you to the place you now call home.

What’s In Your Bag? is an illustration series inspired by Taiwanese comfort foods
— including braised pork rice (lu rou fan), popcorn chicken, and Tainan danzai noodles — reimagined using ingredients found

in British supermarkets.

Each dish is illustrated inside a traditional Taiwanese market shopping bag, an every- day object that becomes a container for memory, routine, and quiet homesickness.

Rather than pursuing strict authenticity, the project focuses on substitution and adjustment: swapping sauces, modifying seasonings, and redefining what “home cooking” means when living abroad.

Packaging from UK supermarkets appears alongside Taiwanese dishes, reflecting how migration subtly reshapes taste through what is locally available.
